Finishing First Year

Thegirlsclub

I honestly cannot believe that I am actually writing a blog post about finishing my first year of university. It only seems like yesterday that I was choosing out decorations, and printing photos for my new room, but now that all feels like a distant memory.

My first year of university has been a roller-coaster of emotions, shall we say, especially due to COVID-19. From spending a total of 4 weeks in isolation to daily BBQ's when the sun came out, I really cannot complain about the people I have met, and the memories I have made. Looking back at young, innocent, 18 year-old Grace, I really thought I knew what to expect with regards to university, but now I realise I didn't have a clue. I didn't realise how much it would change me as a person, allow me to evolve and grow into this young independent woman. I really had no idea.

But now I want to prepare you guys a little if any of you are considering going to uni, or have recently been accepted. If you have then congrats, you are really about to experience the best 3/4 years of your life.

So for any fresh meat about to start their uni experience I have a few tips for you:

  1. BRING plug extensions. There are never enough plug sockets in the rooms to use so make sure you bring one/even 2 so you are covered

  2. Also bring a bag/basket to transport your washing to and from the laundry room. I had my laundry bag which I chucked everything in, and then separated different washes into a basket to take with me to the laundry room

  3. BRING SLIDERS/SLIPPERS you don't mind getting TRASHED. It is true what you have most probably heard about a uni kitchen, they are disgusting, so always bring shoes you can wear in the kitchen, and make sure they are not your favourites

  4. Make sure to decorate your room nice, and the way that you want. There is nothing worse than being surrounded by 4 plain walls that are bare and boring. Its finally your time to go crazy and decorate your own bedroom how you want it to look. Buy loads of little plants from Urban Outfitters, go to ikea and get that hanging plant you have always wanted. You are free now to do your own thing

  5. Finally my main tip DO NOT FEEL PRESSURISED TO DO ANYtHING YOU DONT WANT TO. If you don't want to go out one night, don't feel comfortable, want to get some work done but don't want to seem boring ITS OK I promise. It is your uni experience and you live it how you want to. Don't let anyone else tell you what to do, pressurise you and then call you names. Firstly they are then not your friends so go find some new ones, and secondly they might be partying and going out every night, but uni overall is about the grade you get at the end of it, so work your bum off and get that first to help you for the future.

Honestly it is hard to sum up my experience as a whole in just one blog post. But now that first year is done, it is time to really get my head down and focus on the next two years. There is one part of me that cannot wait to go back to my new house in September with my new housemates and start a whole different chapter of my university story. However there is also a part of me that wants time to freeze and standstill so I can really appreciate and take in the last moments of being able to be a young-adult, before the world of work hits me. Luckily I still have 2 years so I don't have to panic yet about what the future holds for me, however I know that being a uni student isn't going to last forever. Thats why I'm making every single second count.

If anyone has any questions, comments or wants to have a private chat about going to uni, or their uni experience then dm me or get in touch, I would love to talk to you guys !!!!!
